Magnets

Magnets is a project that explores the relationship between two surfaces that have been derived from the same three-dimensional shape. The concept of two magnets was used as inspiration for the design of the panels and supporting waffle structure, where each is influences and is influenced by one another.

The panelling of the two surfaces is informed by the overarching idea of magnets which repel and attract simultaneously. In order to represent the positive and negative attraction of magnets, two different 3D shapes were chosen to be applied to opposite panels in order to demonstrate the different forces that inform the overall design of the panels. Amongst the 3D panels there are 2D panels that echo on both panels in order to highlight the fundamental connection between the two panels.

In order to support the panels a waffle structure was generated using the surface contours to develop fins that could interlock to form the overall structure. The waffle itself consists of horizontal and vertical fins that form a coherent structure that acts as a mount from which the panels can sit. Kept relatively simple, the waffle structure attempts to create the most basic structure that is still able to support the panels.
